After moving from shared hosting to having my own server stability of the hosting has been near perfect, I have been doing a lot more system administration and with the primary focus of the business moving from hosting to web development a restructure was in order. The dedicated server has been great but I have never utilised even 10% of what it is capable of so rather than having all my eggs in one basket as it were I have been moving accounts to new platforms.
We have set up a new Virtual Private Server (VPS) to move the bulk of the accounts to, its just like having the dedicated server but smaller and all the hardware worries are gone as the hard drives are in a RAID Array which is so if one fails it can be replaced with a hot swap. Some accounts are also moving to hosting here in Australia to start with on a shared server and later a VPS based here in Australia to complement it.
All customers are being notified and given the choice of which platform they want to move to, when the move happens most customers will not even realise they have been moved as we will be copying over the accounts and redirecting traffic from the old server. As I write this we have moved 80% of clients over with smooth transitions for all, this week will see the last of them moved over then we can decommission the old server (not really that old, its only been two years) at the end of February.
VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, in other words the ability to make phone calls over the internet. As for the second part “How can it help me” the advantage of VoIP for most people is the savings on call costs.
If you run up a large phone bill making lots of interstate or international calls then VoIP may be just what you need. Using VoIP can be as simple as picking up the phone so for those of you who are not technically savvy yes it is still for you
.
Unlike a normal phone which turns sound into electrical signals which are then routed through the telephone network to the person you are calling where they are turned back into sound by their phone. VoIP technology digitally encodes your voice and sends it over the internet the same as sending a file via email, at the other end the packets of data are reassembled into the correct order decoded and converted back to normal sound.
Call quality can be even better than using a normal phone to make the call. Continue reading →
As I promised in my first post I have added more infomation and there will be lots more to come.
The about page has some information about me including a photo, I will get a better one later as that one is my licence photo that I scanned in.
There is also some information about the products and services we offer as well as links to out other websites. More information to come
Well here we are starting again with this website, this time I though we might try a blog.
I have a few customers who are really into blogs in a big way, not suprising when you consider they are in the business of Knowledge Management. After seeing their websites grow and the amount of information provided in a structured way I thought why not give it a go.
In its previous incarnation this site was going to be about my business Weby Systems but apart from some general information about the business I never really got around to filling in all the details. I have my main site weby.com.au which is just about the hosting and design side of things. There is also webyssl.com which is a stand alone website for selling SSL certificates and lastly webydomains.com again stand alone and this one is for domains.
Ok now all the plugs are out of the way who is Weby Systems and what is going to be different this time?
Who is Weby Systems?
Weby Systems is me Ronald Rogers, I provide Web Development and Hosting services as well as a bit of general IT support. I will put up a full bio on the about page (I will I promise). Weby Systems is only a small business there is just me which works out well as I can work on a personal level with my clients.
For jobs that are outside of my field of expertise I call upon the talents of others, for Graphic Design I can put you in touch with some of the very talented people I have done work with. While I can develop almost anything for a web application, Graphic design is not my strong suit, so one for the experts there. Once I have a layout I can start work and replicate it in a web environment. For a basic website I start with a standard template layout and customise it from there to suite the customers requirements.
For hosting I deal with Tier 1 Providers ie. those that have their own racks of equipment in the datacentres. They own and maintain the hardware and are first in maitainence for software, this provides me with a 99.999% stable platform for my own web sites and for my customers.
All this leaves me free to deal with the important things in my business “My Customers”.
So whats next?
Well apart from some general information about Weby Systems I will also post information and articles about some of the services and products I use and some general insites into web development. A couple to start off with will be VOIP and Credit Card Payment processors. Every now and then I might have a bit of a rant as well about some topic or other I just have to talk about
but thats the philosophy behind blogs in the first place isn’t it?
So bye for now and back to work for me!!
