The biggest problem most people face when first getting involved with new technology or ideas is understanding the terminology. The people who deal with it on a daily basis the ‘experts’ and ’salesmen’ seem to talk in a language of their own and seem to spout a stream of goobledegook if you ask them a question. Without a baseline or a point of comparison there can be no understanding.
When you are looking to purchase a product or service you will first identify a need, then you will look for suppliers and then compare their offerings. As in most things in life we bring things down to simple analogies ie Comparing Apples with Apples say that to someone and 99.99% of the time they will understand what you are talking about.
Why? well it is an expression that they have heard before, not only that you are talking about a physical item that they have held.
In life as you encounter new things and ideas you build on past experience, expanding your knowledge. If you run into something that is beyond your experience then you need someone to explain it’s purpose, of course then can explain the facts but if they explain it in such a way as to draw on your previous experience you will gain a better understanding.
So what is all this about?
Well in most cases when a customer comes to me looking for a website I normally run through a basic set of questions to gain some insight as to what they are after, now and the future direction for their website. For the majority of customers this is new ground so I have to explain what the various terms mean and what the differences are. After nearly 5 years of doing this I find myself saying almost the same thing to each customer so I thought I may as well write it all down and put it in one place.
Where do you start?
When trying to explain something you have to start with a baseline of general knowledge of the person you are talking to. In this series I would expect the user to have a basic understanding of how to use a PC ie. they can turn it on, do basic word processing and be able to use a browser window to look up a website. Life skills well if you manage to get up and go out and survive the work day world then you should understand everything I say.
